Atomic TweetDeck is an unofficial alternative to the TweetDeck for Windows app that was shut down by Twitter on April 15th, 2016. This open-source app allows access, on the desktop, to the now-web-based TweetDeck.
How does TweetDeck work and will benefit you?
TweetDeck is a web app meant to help those who want to manage multiple Twitter accounts from one place. Some of its best features and advantages include — tweet a message, like a tweet, or follow someone from multiple accounts. You can synchronize actions across accounts or set a default one.
Another great capability of TweetDeck is the TweetDeck columns function that allows you to get access to custom feeds for extremely advanced research and online comparative analysis. For example, you can add multiple columns to display specific content, according to your needs/interests; arrange and view the columns side-by-side. Customize the content so it displays: all your mentions, the results of a search query, a list of likes, the latest Tweets from a given hashtag or trend, etc.
How is the Atomic TweetDeck experience?
The Atomic TweetDeck tool is an open-source, free Electron app that was built mainly in Javascript. It is an alternative to the discontinued desktop app and it targets, principally, Windows users. The tool is semi-portable, meaning it is mobile and can easily be moved. It does not need an installer and will be accessed from the app icon, in its original folder.
The tool is an interface for the web app, and without an active an Internet connection, it will display a blank page. According to the developer's initial instructions, it should be minimized in the system tray and easily retrievable from there. However, unfortunately, this function is not available at the moment which is not quite convenient.
Conclusion
To summarize, TweetDeck is the tool you need if managing multiple Twitter accounts is your goal, or if you need to conduct social-media specific research. Atomic TweetDeck is a desktop app that will give you access, directly from your computer, to the online service.
Despite the system tray bug, Atomic TweetDeck is a useful tool. Of course, being an open-source project is a big plus as it always leaves place for improvement and additions through contributions. If you are looking to an alternative to the web-based TweetDeck, Atomic TweetDeck might just be the solution for you.

Earlier this week, Twitter implemented new rules around its TweetDeck and Twitter API to reduce spam and improve the quality and reliability of information shared on the platform. Now Twitter has announced another update, they will end support for its official Mac app in mid-March. While this is disappointing for the app’s fans, Twitter for Mac has never been a high priority for the company.
In 2010, Twitter acquired Tweetie. At the time, Twitter did not have an official app, so the acquisition made sense. However, the app was promptly forgotten about. Eventually, it fell out of use due to infrequent updates. The last time Twitter for Mac was updated was in 2015. Engadget’s Roberto Baldwin predicted that the next update would be released in 2018. While that was surprisingly accurate, he probably wasn’t expecting that update to be the app’s removal from the Mac App Store.
Since Twitter for Mac wasn’t properly maintained, other apps took its place. Even Twitter had a competing app in TweetDeck.
Considering the app wasn’t publicized much and TweetDeck is better known, many Mac users either didn’t know the app existed or didn’t care. Most digital media managers use a third-party app, such as Hootsuite.
Anyone who wants to use a Twitter-owned account manager still has TweetDeck as an option, so it doesn’t sense for Twitter to continue support for a separate Mac app.
Twitter also probably realized that its resources are better spent elsewhere. Earlier this month, Digital Trends conducted an informal poll on Twitter that doesn’t bode well for any Mac apps.

Windows users who use the Windows version of the app are in luck. Currently, Twitter’s Windows 10 app remains on the Microsoft Store, but no one knows how much longer that will be the case.
